Many religions require elaborate initiation ceremonies in order to be considered a true member of their faith. In some extreme circumstances, one has to be born of a bloodline of adherents to even be considered a member. In contrast, Islam makes no such elaborate restrictions.
Instead, a person who wishes to become a Muslim does so, by a conversion of heart and mind to the simple proposition that 'there is no god apart from God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God.' Once a person has the courage to acknowledge this reality publicly, they are recognized as a member of the family of Islam.
It is then a personal responsibility of this person, having shown the courage to acknowledge and submit to the will of God that they also have the courage and wisdom to continue their new found path by allowing God into their daily lives and by adopting self discipline and self restraint through the pillars of faith of Islam.
