The Arabic word 'Islam' simply means 'submission', and derives from a word meaning 'peace'. In a religious context it means complete submission to the will of God.
'Mohammedanism' is thus a misnomer because it suggests that Muslims worship Muhammad rather than God. 'Allah' is the Arabic name for God, which is used by Arab Muslims and Christians alike.
Such misconceptions can be explained in part when Muslim academics over the ages have sought to qualify Muhammad as the very last messenger.
As a result, there has been a movement within Islam that has indeed raised Muhammad to almost deity status. This was never the intent of Muhammad, nor the message of Qur'an. It is unfortunately a byproduct of orthodoxy and a way of any religious administration in restricting further inspiration and challenge to their authority.
